We met the Academy Award-Winner director Laszlo Nemes at the 59° Thessaloniki International Film Festival, after the screening of his second movie Sunset, a very fashionable movie. And here is what he told us about the stunning costumes.

Hats are never simply just hats: they show who the wearers are, their status, their belonging to a social class.
They can also be the main characters of a movie. That’s what happens in Sunset, where the hats, frivolous and beautiful, are the symbols of very hard historic times: the outbreak of World War I and the fall of the colorful and glamourus Mittel European civilization of the beginning of the century in a pit of dark shadows and violence.
Sunset is the second movie directed and co-written by Hungarian film director Laszlo Nemes who – after winning in 2015 the Grand Prix at Cannes, the Golden Globe and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film with its debut movie The Son of Saul – comes back with a period movie, this time set in Budapest before World War I, starring newcomer Juli Jakab.
Jakab plays Irisz Leiter, a young woman who, after resigning her job as a milliner in Trieste, returns in Budapest in 1913. Here she looks for a job making hats in the fashionable Leiter hat store that her parents once owned, before they perished in a fire that destroyed the store. Not only getting that job turns out to be harder than expected, Juli also learns of a brother she never knew she had and embarks on a journey to find him.
In Sunset costumes are quite stunning and costume designer Gyorgyi Szakacs deserves recognition especially for the splendid hats.
But why don’t we let the director Laszlo Nemes to talk us about these amazing costumes?

Abbiamo incontrato il regista premio Oscar Laszlo Nemes al 59° Thessaloniki International Film Festival, dove ha presentato il suo film Sunset, dove la moda è protagonista. Sentite cosa ci ha detto sui bellissimi costumi.
I cappelli non sono semplicemente cappelli: indicano l’appartenenza ad una classe sociale o ad una città, danno informazioni sulla personalità di chi li indossa.
Possono anche essere protagonisti di un film. Come succede in Sunset, dove i cappelli, frivoli e bellissimi, sono il simbolo di un momento storico difficile: lo scoppio della Prima Guerra Mondiale e la caduta della luminosa società Mitteleuropea dell’inizio del secolo in un vortice di ombre nere e di violenza.
Sunset è il secondo film del regista Laszlo Nemes che – dopo aver vinto nel 2015 il Grand Prix al Festival di Cannes, il Golden Globe e l’Oscar come Miglior Film in Lingua Straniera con il suo primo film Son of Saul – torna con un film in costume, questa volta ambientato nella Budapest alla vigilia del primo conflitto mondiale.
La protagonista è Irisz Leiter (Juli Jakab) che, dopo aver lasciato il suo lavoro di modista a Trieste, torna a Budapest con la speranza di trovare un lavoro nel negozio di cappelli Leiter, che un tempo apparteneva ai suoi genitori, morti nel misterioso incendio che ha distrutto il negozio. Non solo ottenere quel lavoro si rivela più difficile del previsto, Juli scopre anche l’esistenza di un fratello che non sapeva di avere e si mette alla sua ricerca.
In Sunset i costumi sono eccezionali e la costume designer Gyorgyi Szakacs merita una menzione speciale soprattutto per gli splendidi cappelli.
Ma lasciamo che sia proprio il regista Laszlo Nemes a parlarci di questi bellissimi costumi.
